Ethel Cain
American singer-songwriter (born 1998)
Hayden Silas Anhedönia, known professionally as Ethel Cain, is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, and model. She became known for her ambient and Southern Gothic-style music and lyrics.
She began releasing recordings under various aliases, before releasing multiple extended plays including Inbred (2021) which garnered various singles including "Crush".
Hayden Silas Anhedönia was born on March 24, 1998. She is the eldest of four children in a Southern Baptist family. Her father was a deacon, and she was involved in the church choir from a young age, like her mother. At age 8, Anhedönia began studying classical piano, with musical influences from a variety of Christian music, as well as Florence Welch, who served as Anhedönia's inspiration as she wrote her first album as a teenager. The church was Anhedönia's first exposure to music: "My whole life was always singing, always, always music all the time", she said. She left the church at the age of 16. Anhedönia was homeschooled.
Anhedönia officially started making music in 2017, experimenting with "dreamy bedroom pop demos" under different monikers. As White Silas, she first published Gregorian chant-inspired singles and mixtapes to SoundCloud and Tumblr, the latter now having been deactivated and no longer associated with the artist. In 2019, Anhedönia started recording music as Ethel Cain, which became her current main project. For the new moniker, she thought of a "womanly, matronly, old American name", while also taking inspiration from the biblical figure of Cain. Her first extended play as Ethel Cain, Carpet Bed, consisted of four songs and was released on September 13, 2019. Months later, she released her second EP, Golden Age, on December 1. After the...

She announced the album alongside the release of its lead single, "Gibson Girl", on March 17, 2022. It was followed by the second single, "Strangers", on April 7. "American Teenager" was released as the third and final single from the album on April 21, through her record label, Daughters of Cain. Music and lyrics
"American Teenager" is 4 minutes and 18 seconds long. It is a heartland rock and pop song with elements of country rock and folk music. It has also been described as an ambient pop, indie folk, pop rock, and arena rock track by select music publications. It is driven by synthesizers, guitar, and drums with a hook reminiscent of rock music from the 1980s. Cain's vocals, and the track itself, contain considerable amounts of reverb. Its guitar riff is a sample of the song "Don't Stop Believin'" (1981) by the American rock band Journey. "American Teenager" is the most upbeat song on Preacher's Daughter and was seen as its most commercially appealing track by Paul Bridgewater from The Line of Best Fit. Pitchfork's Olivia Horn deemed it Cain's...
Music video and live performances
Cain directed and edited the music video for "American Teenager", which was filmed by Silken Weinberg in Cain's hometown of Perry, Florida. Cain wore her mother's cheerleading uniform to the city's high school football field, shooting the video on the same camera used for the music video of her song "God's Country" (2021). She stated that she felt it correct to follow in her mother's "footsteps" for the music video after looking at old pictures of her mother. The video pays homage to American Football and contains footage of the September 11 attacks. It also includes a longer intro to the song.
