Girls Aloud worked closely with Brian Higgins and his songwriting and production team Xenomania throughout their career. Xenomania produced all of Girls Aloud's albums and singles, excluding nine songs from their debut album, Sound of the Underground, the charity single "Walk This Way" and two songs from Ten. Of Higgins and Xenomania, Girls Aloud's former manager Louis Walsh says, "He just makes great songs for radio. They just jump out at you and stay in your brain." In a review of the group's debut single "Sound of the Underground", The Guardian's Alexis Petridis exclaimed it "proved a first: it was a reality pop record that didn't make you want to do physical harm to everyone involved in its manufacture." Girls Aloud's legacy has often been discussed in relation to their collaboration with the songwriting and production team Xenomania. The group's debut single, "Sound of the Underground", and Sugababes' "Round Round", both produced by Xenomania, have been called "two huge groundbreaking hits" that helped redefine British pop in the early 2000s. Emily MacKay of NME characterised the songs as representing "a whole new kind of pop". "Sound of the Underground" has since appeared on several retrospective lists of defining songs of the decade: The Telegraph ranked it 15th on its list of 100 songs that defined the 2000s, NME placed it at number 39, and Spinner.com named it the eighth-best British song of the decade.
Girls Aloud are a British girl group formed in 2002 through the ITV1 reality television programme Popstars: The Rivals. The original lineup consisted of Cheryl, Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts, and Kimberley Walsh. The group was created as part of a televised competition to form a new girl group, with Girls Aloud ultimately winning the public vote against the competing male group One True Voice.
Girls Aloud made their recording debut with Sound of the Underground, released in December 2002. The single reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and established the group as one of the most successful British pop acts of the 2000s. Their music became particularly associated with the production and songwriting team Xenomania, whose work helped shape the group's distinctive sound through unconventional song structures, electronic production, layered vocals, and influences from dance-pop, synth-pop, rock, and alternative pop.
Between 2002 and 2009, Girls Aloud achieved four UK number-one singles and 20 consecutive UK Top 10 singles. Their studio albums Sound of the Underground, What Will the Neighbours Say?, Chemistry, Tangled Up
