Early years (2007–2009)

Mumford & Sons was formed in December 2007 by multi-instrumentalists Marcus Mumford, Ted Dwane, Ben Lovett, and Winston Marshall. Band members play acoustic guitar, drums, keyboard instruments, bass guitar, and traditional folk instruments such as banjo, mandolin and resonator guitar. The band name originates from Marcus Mumford being the most visible member, organising the band and their performances. Lovett indicated that the name was meant to evoke the sense of an "antiquated family business name".

Musical style and development

Mumford & Sons have been described by The Hollywood Reporter and Forbes as a folk rock band. They began by using bluegrass and folk instrumentation, with the core instruments of acoustic guitar, banjo, piano and a double bass, played with a rhythmic style based in alternative rock and folk. In the documentary Big Easy Express, Marcus Mumford recognises the Old Crow Medicine Show influence: "I first heard Old Crow's music when I was, like, 16, 17, and that really got me into, like, folk music, bluegrass. I mean, I'd listened to a lot of Dylan, but I hadn't really ventured into the country world so much. So Old Crow was the band that made me fall in love with country music." Mumford acknowledges that "the band inspired them to pick up the...

Winter Winds

2009 single by Mumford & Sons

"Winter Winds" is the second single by the London folk quartet Mumford & Sons, released from their debut album, Sigh No More. It was released in the UK on 6 December 2009, where it peaked at number 44; in Belgium it reached number 29.

Critical reception

Fraser McAlpine of the BBC Chart Blog gave the song a positive 5-star review, stating that it would serve as an "amazing Christmas carol equivalent" for a 'winterval' type holiday, as "it's quietly optimistic, pleased without being smug, melancholy but uplifting, " and "sure of itself, but only because all the lessons learned have been hard-won, and generally reflective of times gone by".

Music video

In an interview with The A.V. Club, Marcus Mumford said the idea for the video coincides with the writing of the song. "We didn't want to make something that had multiple interpretations and ideas coming from every side. We wanted to express the song. When we were writing [Winter Winds] I was in a pretty chaotic relationship. When we were good we were great but when we weren't, it was horrid. And she continually had put in time and energy to sustain this relationship and something in me wouldn't allow it to. So here I was fighting a feeling, of she's wonderful, she's this, she's that, and still I didn't want her completely. And here she was fighting me, trying to save this sinking ship. We wanted the video to reflect that. You're...

Critical reception

The song has received generally favourable reviews. Grady Smith of Entertainment Weekly gave the song a positive review, saying how the song "hearkens back to their Grammy-nomination-festooned single "The Cave" with its shouted refrain, triumphant horns, a driving kick drum, and an earnest lyric about a relationship so perfect it has Marcus Mumford kneeling down in reverence, raising his hands, and wishing for his mind to be "freed from the lies."" Stephanie Middleton of The Celebrity Cafe said, "With untouched vocals and harmonies, the boys manage to create yet another genuine Mumford & Sons track."

A drum kit and an old sweaty laundry in Bangkok while on tour provided all we needed.

Woman

2019 single by Mumford & Sons

The song was written by Marcus Mumford, Winston Marshall, Ben Lovett and Ted Dwane.

Composition

Mumford & Sons started writing music for their fourth album Delta several years before it was released. While the other members were in Brooklyn, guitarist and banjoist Winston Marshall began work on some of the songs on the album in Nashville, where his then-girlfriend Dianna Agron was filming a movie and they became engaged. Marshall had been encouraged by sound engineer Garrett Miller to try more synthesized music, and composed the first verse and the falsetto hook of "Woman" in Nashville. When he took it back to the other members, pianist Ben Lovett described first hearing the song by saying: "[it] just felt like something that was very, very different, but also felt really good. Maybe that was a moment that we felt unshackled by...
