1992–2002: Early years
The band started out as a quintet named "Groundswell" in Norwood, Ontario, in 1992. Groundswell released one full-length album, Wave of Popular Feeling in 1995. The band's line-up consisted of lead vocalist Adam Gontier, drummer Neil Sanderson, bassist Brad Walst, lead guitarist Phil Crowe, and rhythm guitarist Joe Grant. Most of the members were attending high school when the band formed. By the end of 1995, the band had broken up.
Three Days Grace's music has been described as post-grunge, hard rock, alternative rock, alternative metal, and nu metal. The band's image has been mistaken as a Christian rock band due to the word "grace" being in their name; however, Gontier noted that they were "far from being a Christian rock band." The group stated that their early influences were from Canadian bands the Tragically Hip, Our Lady Peace and Finger Eleven, as well as from the Seattle rock scene, especially the groups Sunny Day Real Estate, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Other influences they have cited include Stone Temple Pilots, Deftones, Jim Morrison, and Chester Bennington.
The group have been recognized on numerous Billboard's "Greatest of All Time" lists. They were ranked at number three on their "Greatest of All Time Mainstream Rock Artists" list. Billboard also listed "Break", "Chalk Outline", "Pain", "Animal I Have Become" and "I Am Machine" as the "Greatest of All Time Mainstream Rock Songs", with "Break" and "Chalk Outline" in the top 10. "I Hate Everything About You" was ranked at number 9 on the Billboard Decade-End Alternative Songs chart in 2009. Loudwire named "Animal I Have Become" the 45th "Top 21st Century Hard Rock Songs" in 2012 and also listed "Never Too Late" as one of the "66 Best Hard Rock Songs of the 21st Century" in 2020. Since 2018, Three Days Grace and Shinedown have either topped or...

Background
Written by Three Days Grace lead vocalist Adam Gontier and produced by Gavin Brown, the theme of "I Hate Everything About You" deals with love-hate relationships. Gontier said of the track:
Critical reception
"I Hate Everything About You" was met with positive reviews from music critics. Heather Phares of AllMusic called the song "one of the better alt-metal/modern rock singles in recent memory". She stated, "At first, the song seems almost stupidly simple, both lyrically and musically. However, the controlled fury of the choruses and the ambivalent verses make the song a surprisingly smart and concise anthem for anyone stuck in a baffling relationship." She also added, "I Hate Everything About You's frustrated explosions and passive-aggressive recriminations eerily simulate the trajectory of an ill-fated couple." Dave Doray of IGN praised the guitar licks that complement with Gontier's vocals. Kaj Roth of Melodic called the track "a typical...

The music video for "I Hate Everything About You" premiered on June 18, 2003, via MTV. The video was photographed by cinematographer Steve Gainer and directed by Scott Winig. The video starts zoomed in towards several things, such as a TV producing static, a picture frame, and an ash tray, and then transitions towards Adam Gontier who starts singing. The video shows three teenagers going through a disastrous moment in their lives. One shows a young boy who finds his girlfriend cheating on him in the alleyway, kissing another guy. He is spying on them in his car. The second teenager is a young girl, who just broke up with her boyfriend, and the last is a boy who is being abused by his alcoholic father.
